Double your Family’s Credit Card Points and Miles
If your family is large or you want to plan a long trip, it can be DAUNTING to think of how many credit cards points you will need to earn. In addition, there is the struggle with deciding which card to get and how to maximize spend to get the most points on those credit cards.

A great strategy to increase your points is to involve your partner or another adult in your household in opening credit cards.
Relationship safety tip here – no credit cards/points are worth the argument with your partner. They…ahem..might be concerned of the legality of credit card points and miles. (It’s legal -trust me) Come to any discussion informed but open to the idea that they might not get on-board now or ever.
Best way to involve your partner
- Copy each other’s moves
- When you have met the minimum spend of your new Chase Sapphire Preferred card, refer your partner to apply for the SAME card. You will get a referral bonus and your partner can earn the new welcome bonus. If you are in the same household, Chase allows you to move points between members.
- This is great because you are gaining more points in the same transferrable currency, in this case Chase Ultimate Rewards points, as opposed to being scattered with no way to combine them.
- You also do not have to learn a brand new set of spend category bonuses
- Allow extra time between applications
- Alternate who applies so that you have double the amount of time
- If you partner is not on-board yet, still have them participate in the spend for your welcome bonus and category spend
- You can make your partner an authorized user
- American Express is known to offer a bonus when signing up an authorized user and they meet a minimum spend
- Just keep track of how this affects your partner’s 5/24 count in their credit history
